Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of seed storage on the seed germination and to detect the dormant period of Jatropha curcas linn seed. The experiment was carried out from February to June of 2007 in Seed Technology laboratory of Agricultural Faculty, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya Subdistrict, Ogan Ilir Regency. The method of experiment was observation method. The data collected were processed statistically to detect the relationship between variable that observed. In this experiment there were ten replications, then the seeds were stored in 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, and 36 days. Observed variable of this experiment were germination rate, moisture content, and tetrazolium test. In the variable of germination rate, the storage time was affected the rate of jatropha curcas Linn seed germination in the level of 49,24%. In moisture content variable, the increase of storage time could decrease the moisture content of seed while it was showed from regression coefficient value of 82,12%. In tetrazolium test variable, seed storage was affected the seed to germinate in tetrazolium test in the value of 65,82%. Experiment result was showed that the correlation between the three variables which observed, they were germination rate, moisture content, and tetrazolium test, were very significant. Correlation analysis result between germination rate and moisture content, which the value of 0,33 which showed very significant. Correlation between variable germination rate and tetrazolim test showed very significant which the value of 0,36. Then, the correlation between variable of moisture content and tetrazolium test was also very significant, which the value of 0,38. The coefficient above was influenced very significant at level r table 5% (0,1985) and 1% (0,2595). According to the result of experiment can be concluded that germination rate was correlated very significant with the moisture content and tetrazolium test, regression result showed that the decrease of moisture content resulted the decrease of germination rate and the result of coloring test of tetrazolium test, dan seed storage more than 20 days could resulted gemination rate less than 80% and tetrazolium test less than 60%.
