Abstract

Based on the data from the Tanjung Raja Class IIA Correctional Institution, diarrhea ranks third among the most prevalent diseases experienced by inmates in the institution. The incidence of diarrhea in 2021 was recorded at 14.4%, increasing to 24.4% in 2022 among a total of 914 inmates. The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship between hygiene and sanitation in prison cells with the occurrence of diarrhea among inmates at the Tanjung Raja Class IIA Correctional Institution. This research is an epidemiological study using a cross-sectional design with a sample size of 136 respondents chosen using proportional random sampling. In this study, the data analysis methods used include univariate analysis, bivariate analysis based on the chi-square test, and multivariate analysis based on logistic regression. The bivariate analysis results indicate a significant relationship between diarrhea occurrence among inmates and handwashing with soap (p-value = 0.006), nail-cutting habits (p-value = 0.032), toilet conditions (p-value = 0.030), floor cleanliness (p-value = 0.016), housing density (p-value = 0.043), and no significant relationship between diarrhea occurrence and waste disposal. The multivariate analysis results show that nail-cutting habits have the most significant impact on diarrhea occurrence with a p-value of 0.011; PR = 2.807; CI = 1.270—6.203. This research concludes that there is a significant relationship between the variables of hand washing with soap, toilet conditions, floor cleanliness, population density, and the incidence of diarrhea among inmates. Additionally, the variable of nail-cutting habits was found to have the most significant influence on the occurrence of diarrhea among inmates at the Tanjung Raja Class IIA Correctional Institution. The authorities are encouraged to educate the inmates to improve hygiene by washing hands with soap, regularly cutting nails, routinely cleaning the cells, and disposing of waste properly to ensure the health of the inmates and protect them from various diseases.
