Abstract

Female farmers of childbearing age are one of the groups of farmers at risk of negative impacts due to pesticide exposure. The intensity of pesticide exposure in female farmers of childbearing age can cause health problems, especially reproduction disorders, especially if they do not use PPE so that the risk of pesticide exposure is even greater. Hence, this study aims to analyze the factors associated with PPE use behavior among female farmers of reproductive age in South Dempo District, Pagar Alam City. This research was an observational quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The population of this study was all female farmers of childbearing age in the South Dempo District. The study sample was 116 people taken with the purposive sampling technique. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and multiple logistic regression test. The results of the chi-square test showed a significant relationship between education (p=0.019), income (p=0.000), knowledge (p=0.020), attitude (p=0.043), and availability of PPE (p=0.000) with PPE use behavior in female farmers of childbearing age. The variables of age (p=0.570), working period (p=0.845), and agricultural extension support (p=0.461) were not significantly associated with PPE use behavior in female farmers of childbearing age. From the results of the multiple logistic tests, the most dominant variable that influences PPE use behavior was the availability of the PPE variable (p = 0.000; PR = 16.570). It can be concluded that the PPE use behavior of female farmers of fertile age is caused by the most dominant factor, which is the availability of PPE. This study suggests that there should be an education program for farmers about the importance of using PPE and assistance in providing PPE as an effort to prevent the hazards of pesticides to health.
