Abstract

Environmental sanitation is one of the factors that influence health status. Poor sanitation can lead to the development of infectious diseases. Young children are an age group that is vulnerable to infectious diseases due to poor sanitation. Poor feeding practices lead to low nutritional intake in young children and cause stunting. The aim of the research is to analyse the relationship between environmental sanitation, history of diarrhoea and feeding practices for young children with the incidence of stunting in the Musi River Basin Area. The method used was a cross-sectional survey of young children aged 24-59 months in the Musi River Basin Area. The population in this study were all toddlers in the Musi River bank area, Seberang Ulu I District, Palembang City with a sample size of 152 respondents determined using purposive random sampling. The analysis used chi-square test and multiple logistic regression test for risk factor models. It was found that 44 young children (28.9%) out of 152 respondents were stunted. Chi-square test results show a real relationship between waste disposal facilities (p-value = 0.018) and the incidence of stunting in young children, and there is no relationship between latrine facilities (p-value = 0.201), SPAL facilities (p-value = 1. 000), clean water (p-value = 0.799), drinking water treatment (p-value = 0.347), history of diarrhoea (p-value = 0.931), infant feeding practices (p-value = 0.099) with the incidence of stunting in young children in Sungai Bantan Area Musi, Seberang Ulu I District, Palembang City. The results of the multiple logistic regression test for risk factors show that sanitation facilities are the dominant risk factor influencing the incidence of stunting (p-value = 0.014; PR = 3.300; 95% CI = 1.279 - 8.520). It was concluded that sanitation facilities were the dominant factor influencing the incidence of stunting among young children aged 24-59 months in the Musi River Bank Area. To reduce the incidence of stunting in young children, particularly in the Musi River Bank area.
