Abstract
The objective of this research was to comprehend the population dynamics of banana aphid Pentalonia nigronervosa Coq. infested and reared on three species of araceous plants, namely ornamental caladium (Caladium bicolor), rodent tuber (Typhonium flagelliforme) and taro (Colocasia esculenta). The experimental research was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 treatments, 7 replications and 7 times of observation. Sampling method used for observation was destructive sampling method. Observations were made to collect data on number of nymphs, wingless imagoes, and winged imagoes. The dead aphid also recorded to calculate the aphid mortality. The population parameter counted were maximum population reached on each plant species, time to reach the maximum population, mortality, and growth rate of the aphid. All population parameters were analyzed using analyses of variance. The results showed that banana aphid P. nigronervosa could live and breed on all three araceous species used as trial plants, at different level of population size and mortality but at the same growth rate. Taro (C. esculenta) appeared to be the most suitable alternative host to banana aphid P. nigronervosa compared to rodent tuber and ornamental caladium.
