Abstract
This research utilizes CO2 gas to become methanol through an electrochemical method using a Membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The MEA used consists of MEA-A with a Microporous layer (MPL) layer on the cathode and MEA-B which does not have an MPL layer. The electrode on the MEA has a different catalyst composition, where the cathode uses a Cu2O-ZnO/C catalyst while the anode uses Pt/C. The cathodes of both MEAs were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The CO2 conversion process into methanol uses a single-stage electrolyzer in two conditions, namely a fixed voltage of 1.8 V and a fixed current of 0.05 A with operating times of 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours. The percentage of methanol produced is then measured through methanol analyzer analysis. The morphology of cathode-A has an average pore size of 0.158 μm and cathode-B is 0.181 μm. The thickness of cathode-A and cathode-B were respectively found to be 249.36 μm and 243.27 μm. The highest methanol concentration under constant current conditions of 0.05 A was produced at 8 hours of MEA-A operation with a methanol concentration of 10% w/v. Meanwhile, under constant voltage conditions of 1.8 V, the highest methanol concentration was produced at 2 hours of operation with MEA-A of 9% w/v.
