Abstract

The use of quality seeds is a determining factor in the potential results that can be achieved in plant cultivation. Seeds are basic need for cocoa production. One of the obstacles in providing quality seeds is that cocoa seeds are fleshy and watery seeds (pulp). During physiological and morphological maturity, the water content of the seeds is still very high, the seeds are covered by pulp which adheres to each other in the spaces where the seeds are arranged and contains inhibitory materials. The research was carried out at the Seed Technology Laboratory, Department of Agricultural Cultivation, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Inderalaya, Ogan Ilir, from July to August 2023. This research was aimed to determine the most effective extraction method to remove mucus from cocoa beans thereby accelerating cocoa seed germination. The method used in this research was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), with 6 treatments. Each treatment was repeated 4 times to obtain 24 experimental units, each experimental unit contained 2 trays consisting of 10 seeds. So there were a total of 48 trays. The treatment consisted of A = washed with running water, B = washed with hot water 80oC, C = rubbed using 50 g of quicklime (CaCO3), D = rubbed using 100 g of quicklime (CaCO3). E = Cocoa seeds are rubbed using 50 g rice husk ash, and F = rubbed using 100 g rice husk ash. In this study, the parameters observed consisted of germination capacity, maximum growth potential, growth speed, plant height, root length, shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root fresh weight, root dry weight and vigor index. The results of this research indicated that treatment of extracted cocoa seeds using 50 g of rice husk ash showed the best results on seed viability.
