Abstract

Welding is a primary manufacturing technique used in a variety of industrial applications. The aim of the research is to determine the relationship between variations in current strength and physical and mechanical properties in SMAW dissmilar metal welding between ASTM A36 and SS 316 using E6010 electrodes. Dye penetrant testing is carried out to identify defects on the surface area around the weld from each different current. Welding current is 60 Ampere, after dyeing the penetrant, there is porosity, spatter, and start and stop. In the weld metal and HAZ SS 316 there are bainite and ferrite widmanstatten phases, this occurs due to the rapid cooling rate. Shows the presence of white ferrite phase and black pearlite phase. In the impact test results, there was the highest value using a current of 80 Ampere of 220.53 J/mm² and the lowest value with a current of 60 Ampere of 193.11 J/mm. It can be concluded that the highest hardness in the weld metal at a current of 80 Ampere with a hardness value of 343.32 HVN and at a current of 60 Ampere it is 219.40 HVN. The incoming heat affects the cooling rate which has an impact on changes in the shape of the microstructure. Using a high current produces good welded joint results compared to a lower current. Micro test results show that the micro structure of the weld metal for each current has a different shape and number of grains, this is influenced by the high and low current.
