Abstract

The research objective was to test the application of ultrasonic sensor for water pump automatization based on the distance between sensor and the measured object in order to prevent over-flowing water that exceed the required reservoir capacity. This study was carried out from December 2007 to February 2008 at the Business Center of Science and Technology Application (PBAST) Palembang and Instrumentation Laboratory of Agriculture Technology Department, Sriwijaya University. This research method consisted of three phases covering controller system design, equipment network assembly and equipment testing, respectively. Design phase involved of hardware and soflware designs. Hardware design phase was consisted of controller system design and the equipment components layout arrangement. Software design phase was consisted of BASCOM-8051 program language design for water pump automatization which was downloaded into AT89S52 micro controller. The equipment testing phase was consisted of three treatments involving water pump operation when the distance between sensor and styrofoam surface were 31 cm, 151.5 cm, and 300 cm, respectively. The observed parameters were the styrofoam distance measured by ultrasonic sensor and the styrofoam distance measured in the field. The biggest measurement diffcrence between the distance measured by sensor and the distance measured in the field was occurred at 3 cm distance, whereas the smallest measurement difFerence was occurred at 151.5 cm distance.
