Abstract

The objectives of this research were to evaluate the root morphology and canopy characteristics of nutrient efficient line (SI) compared to non efficient lines (Y18) of maize at low nutrient supply conditions pH 5.8 and pH 4 to evaluate the nitrogen uptake of nutrient efficient lines compared to their parents at the condition of low nutrient supply with pH 4. The research consisted of two experiments. The first experiment was conducted ffom September to October 2009 and the second experiment which was conducted ffom March to April 2010 in a greenhouse of Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. Experimental designs of both experiments were split plot designs with three replications. The main plot was nutrient supply and a sub plot was com genotypes. The results showed that canopy growth of nutrient efficient line (SI) more depressed than its root, so the root shoot ratio increased, whereas the root growth of non efficient line (Y18) more depressed than the canopy growth, so the root shoot ratio decreased when the nutrient supply was changed ffom 100 % to 30 %. Decreasing the pH ffom pH 5.8 to pH 4.0 in generally decreased the root number and root dry weight (top, middle, bottom and total) but increased the root lenght. Generally nitrogen uptake in the roots as well as in the canopy of nutrient efficient lines was higher than their parents.
