Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of anther on two antioxidants on the growth of callus in anther culture of oil palm {Elaeis guineensis Jacq.). The experiment was conducted at Tissue Culture Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sriwijaya Indralaya. The study was conducted twice. The first study began in October 2009 until December 2009, while the second study began in April 2010 to May 2010. The design was used Randomized Block Design (RBD) with nine position of anther. The position are flower position of in inflroscenses is start position, middle position, and last position. While position inflroscenses on flower are out door, different, and in door. Combination of treatment of PL, PA, PD, TL, TA, TD, UL, UA, and UD which were arranged in three replications. Each replication consisted of 10 experiment unit so there were 270 units which consisted of 5-10 explants. This study used anther oil palm {Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) as a source of explants and cultured in media with two different antioxidants that is activated charcoal and ascorbic acid. The results showed that the position of anthers in the middle interest on inflroscenses and outside bunches of flowers (TL) has a structure like a callus growth percentage of the highest anther fastest time in the middle of anther position interest infloresensia and on between infloresensia the bunches of flowers (TA) both occurred on media with the addition of active charcoal. The highest percentage of life lies in the position of anther interest on infloresensia and outside bunches of flowers (UL). Anther respond more to the media with the addition of activecharcoal antioxsidants than ascorbic acid. Based on the color of callus-like structure generated in this study show a different color. The media with the addition of active charcoal to produce structures such as callus whitish and transparent, while ascorbic acid medium to produce structures such as callus yellowish white and not transparent.
