Abstract

PT Putra Muba Coal is a The company operates in the coal mining sector in the Sungai Lilin Subdistrict, Musi Banyuasin Regency, and the Tungkal Ilir Subdistrict, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. One of the issues at PT. Putra Muba Coal is spontaneous combustion ("swabakar"). During the research, there have been 8 occurrences of spontaneous combustion. The company needs to implement proper stockpile management to prevent spontaneous combustion. The data collected includes primary and secondary data. Primary data required are the dimensions of the coal pile, coal temperature, wind speed, coal stacking time, and stockpile area conditions. Secondary data required are stockpile capacity, rainfall data, coal quality data, and location maps. To measure the temperature of the coal pile, a Thermocouple device is inserted into the coal pile, and an anemometer is used to measure wind speed. The research results indicate the application of a chevcon stacking pattern and a stockpile volume of 19,619 m³. The temperature within the pile averages 63.2°C, exceeding the critical temperature of coal at 50°C. Improving the stacking pattern and implementing good FIFO management can reduce the potential for spontaneous combustion. Several methods can prevent spontaneous combustion, such as compacting the stockpile surface, regularly checking temperatures, and practicing FIFO management. Additionally, post-spontaneous combustion measures include excavating the affected area using heavy machinery, segregating the burning coal, recompacting the area, and using chemicals to lower the coal temperature. In conclusion, this research demonstrates that each coal stacking in the stockpile has the potential for spontaneous combustion but can be minimized through effective stockpile management and geometric design planning.
