Abstract

Hydration status is a condition that can describe the amount of fluid in a person's body. Several studies that have been conducted previously show that the incidence of dehydration, especially in adolescents, is still relatively high. Some factors that can affect hydration status include fluid intake and physical activity. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity, fluid intake, and hydration status in adolescents at SMP Negeri 1 Indralaya, Ogan Ilir Regency. This type of research is analytic observational research with cross-sectional research design. The sample in this study were adolescents aged 12-14 years and actively attending school at SMP Negeri 1 Indralaya, Ogan Ilir Regency, totaling 88 people and selected using proportionate stratified random sampling technique. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using the chi-square test and Fisher Exact Test. The results of univariate analysis showed that 51.8% of respondents were male and 48.2% of respondents were female. Most of the respondents were 12 years old (39.8%). There were 62.5% of respondents had moderate physical activity levels, and 37.5% of respondents had mild physical activity levels. There were 70.5% of respondents who had a category of insufficient fluid intake, and 29.5% had a category of sufficient fluid intake. The average fulfillment of fluid intake levels in this study was 83% of daily needs. 20.5% of respondents were severely dehydrated, 56.8% were mildly dehydrated and 22.7% were well hydrated. The results of bivariate analysis showed that there was no relationship between physical activity and hydration status (p=0.293) and there was a relationship between fluid intake and hydration status (p=0.000). The suggestion from this study is that adolescents should increase their fluid intake accordingly and increase their knowledge about measuring hydration status using the PURI card so that they can monitor their own hydration status.
