Abstract

Human activities in river estuaries are the main cause of plastic waste entering the waters. Plastic waste that enters the water will become smaller parts and is called microplastic. These microplastic particles can be eaten accidentally by biota such as Sembilang fish and will eventually accumulate in their digestive tract. Furthermore, microplastics enter and accumulate in the human body through the food chain. This study aims to determine the abundance, type, and size of microplastics in the digestive tract of Sembilang fish landed around the Musi River Estuary. The research was conducted in August at the Musi River Estuary, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. Identification of microplastic types using the Olympus CX 33 microscope and identification of microplastic size using Image J software. It was found that the abundance of microplastics in the digestive tract of Sembilang fish (Paraloptosus sp.) was 39.2 particles per individual in large samples and 27.6 particles per individual in small samples. The types of microplastics that were successfully found were fiber with as many as 172 particles, film with 79 particles, fragments with 76 particles, and pellets with 8 particles. The microplastics found had a size range between <300 µm and 1000 µm, with <300 µm being the most dominant size in each sample.
