Abstract
The study aims to evaluate yield and several agronomic traits of several derived from maize accessions the cross of soil acid tolerant and high quality protein content. This research was conducted in the farm area at District Indralaya Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra in February to May 2012. This research utilized Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 9 accessions of populations from the crosses, namely GS-5 x Toray-1 (Al), GS-5 x Toray-2 (A2), GS-10x Toray -1 (A3), GS-10 x Toray-2 (A4) and parental populations, namely Toray-1 (A5), Toray -2 (A6), GS-5 (A7), and GS-10 (A8), and Hybrid variety of BISI 816 as control (A0). The results showed that all variables, consisted of plant of height, days of flowering, ear size, ear weight, number of seeds per cob, and dry seed weight per ear showed significant differences. The maize accessions form the cross of acid soil tolerant and high quality protein showed yield potential that are generally equivalent, even, one of them of accession A2 (GS-5xToray-2), showed higher yield potential than BISI 816. The high yield potential was enhanced by good agronomic traits, such as plant height, 100 seed weight, fast flowering, and high protein content. Through assumption of population density of 53.000 plants per ha, the yield potential of maize accessions from the crosses of acid soil tolerant with a high protein content ranges from 1,4 tons to 3,5 tons of dry seed per ha.
