Abstract

This study aims to determine the morphology and anatomy characteristics of the stipules in seven plants. The research was conducted in November 2023 – January 2024 at the Biology Education Laboratory, Sriwijaya University. This study is qualitative research with descriptive methods. The morphological characteristics observed include the type of stipules based on their position, shape and color of the stipules. The anatomical characteristics observed include the type of tissue contained in the transversal section and the characteristics of the tissue in the paradermal section of stipules. The results of morphological research on seven plants found 3 types of stipules based on their position, namely terminal stipules, interpetiolaris stipules, and adnatae stipules. Based on their shape, there are stipules that are sheating, leaf-shaped, and scale-like. Based on the color, there are green and red stipules. The anatomical structure of the stipules shows the type of tissue that resembles the structure of a leaf, consisting of: cuticle, upper epidermis, palisade parenchyma, sponge parenchyma, vascular bundles and lower epidermis in plants; Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson) Fosberg), Cempedak (Artocarpus integer (Thunb).) Merr.), and Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica Roxb. Ex Hornem). Structures that resemble leaf structures are also found in Indian Mulberry (Morinda citrifolia L.) and Roses (Rosa indica L.) plants but have a uniform parenchyma shape. Meanwhile, in Coffee (Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner) and Sandbox Tree (Hura crepitans L.) plants, no vascular bundles were found. The results of this research can be used as enrichment material in the form of a booklet for high school biology learning on the topic of tissue and organ structure in plants.
