Abstract

Background and aim: Maternal nutrition has an important role during pregnancy period. Poor nutrition leads retardation of fetal growth which is reflected by low birth weight and disproportion of neonatal body at birth. That condition may increased risk of chronic diseases in adult life. This study wants to explore whether a causal relationship between birthweight and chronic diseases based on epidemiology evidences. Method: Review of published studies, exploring recent studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, prospective and case control studies. Result: The reviewed of epidemiology evidences shown a little support for significant crucial role of birthweight and chronic diseases in adult life. Conclusion: Determinant of chronic diseases in adult life are complicated with lifestyle factors such as cigarette smoking, diet, and physical activity.
