Abstract

This study aims to describe (1) the form of language variation contained in the novel About You by Tere Liye (2) the characteristics of verbal and nonverbal language in the novel About You by Tere Liye (3) implications for Indonesian Language Learning. The research method used in this study is ethnographic method. The data used in the research are excerpts of the characters' speech in the novel About You. The techniques used are listening technique and note-taking technique. The steps in analyzing the data are as follows: (1) doing domain analysis (2) doing taxonomy analysis (3) doing componential analysis (4) doing cultural theme analysis. Based on the research results, there are 72 utterances that contain language variations. The language variations include: (1) language variation in terms of speakers (2) language variation in terms of usage (3) language variation in terms of formality (4) language variation in terms of means. Variations in terms of speakers include dialect and sociolect variations. Dialect variation consists of 5 utterances of Bajo dialect, 2 utterances of Javanese dialect, and 9 utterances of Betawi dialect. The sociolect variation consists of vulgar variation as many as 2 utterances, colloquial variation as many as 10 utterances, jargon variation as many as 9 utterances, and ken variation as many as 3 utterances. Language variation in terms of usage, namely literary language variation as much as 3 utterances. Variation in terms of formality consists of formal language variation as many as 14 utterances and casual language variation as many as 13 utterances. Language variation in terms of means, namely written language variation as much as 2 utterances. The results of this study can be used as teaching materials in Indonesian Language Learning at junior and senior high school levels. Keywords: dialog, language variation, novel Tentang Kamu
