Abstract

Male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are more attractive and valuable. Monosex production of male fish mostly uses the 17α-methyltestosterone. This hormone is expensive and difficult to obtain. Thus, it is necessary to explore natural ingredients as an alternative replacement. Purwoceng plant (Pimpinella alpina) has the potential to be used. The purpose of this study was to determine the best immersion duration for masculinization of guppy fish. The research design used a completely randomized design, 4 treatments of immersion duration (0, 8, 10, and 12 hours), each treatment was repeated 3 times. After immersion, the larvae were reared for 45 days, fed with Daphnia sp. and cyst Artemia sp. Sex determination was carried out at the end of rearing by surgical method. The results showed that the duration of larval immersion in purwoceng extract had a significant effect (P<0,05) on the number of male fish. In this study, the immersion treatment for 10 hours produced the highest number of male guppies at 83,33%. The results of this study are very useful for the application of sex reversal techniques using phytosterol as a replace for synthetic hormones.
