Abstract

Performance tests of Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) using Pt-Ru/C Catalyst for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) on Electrolyte Membranes and Varying Methanol Concentrations have been carried out. MEA was made by combining Pt-Ru/C electrodes on the anode side and Pt/C on the cathode side using Nafion 117 (N117) and Nafion 212 (N212) membranes. MEA was characterized using the Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) method to determine the ECSA (Electrochemical Surface Area) value and the Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) method to determine the electrical conductivity value. MEA characterization results obtained the highest ECSA value with a 5% methanol concentration on the N117 membrane of 1,945 ×10-5 m2/g, and the N212 membrane of 9,322 ×10-6 m2 /g, while the highest electrical conductivity value was with a 5% methanol concentration on the membrane. N117 and N212 membranes were 2,113 ×10-7 S/cm and 1,164 ×10-8 S/cm respectively. MEA performance test results obtained the highest Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) value with a methanol concentration of 5% on the N117 membrane and N212 membrane, respectively 0.37 V and 0.367 V. The best MEA performance test was with a methanol concentration of 5% on the N117 membrane and membrane. N212 obtained optimum power densities of 0.079 mW/cm2 and 0.065 mW/cm2 respectively.
