Abstract

Introduction: Gambier (Uncaria Gambier [Roxb.]) is useful as a natural antibacterial agent. It contains catechin that can kill bacteria including antibiotic resistant bacteria. The aim of this study was to determine antibacterial effects of Gambier extract in saliva of male Wistar rats. Material and method: This experimental study with pretest-posttest control Group design has been done on Februari-Maret 2016 at Balai Besar Laboratorium Kesehatan Provinsi Sumatera Selatan. Subjects were 30 male rats, divided into 5 Groups negative control (aquadest), positive control (cefradoxil 13 mg), Gambier extract 6 mg, 12 mg, and 24 mg. The number of bacterial colonies was counted from saliva of subjects before and after treatment. Data were analyzed by using SPSS 2.2 vers. Result: The mean of bacterial colonies decreased significantly between before and after treatment in all Groups (p<0,05), except in negative control Group. It also showed that the higher concentration of Gambier extract, the fewer bacterial colonies it had. There were significant differences between the Groups after treatment, except between positive control Group and Gambier extract 25 mg. Conclusion: Gambier extract as an antibacterial effective for decreasing the number of bacterial colonies on male Wistar rats and had dose dependent effect. Antibacterial effect of Gambier extract 24 mg was not significantly different with cefadroxil 13 mg.
