Abstract
Background Neonatal sepsis is a clinical syndrome of systemic illness accompanied by bacteriemia that occurs in the first month of life. Several studies suggest that low vitamin D levels are associated with neonatal sepsis. Objective To determine the mean level of 25 hydroxyvitamin D in healthy and sepsis neonates in Dr. Moh. Hoesin Hospital. Method An analytical descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design conducted from March 2023 to August 2023. Consecutive sampling was performed at the general maternity and perinatology ward, dr. Moh. Hoesin Hospital, Palembang. Every healthy and sepsis neonates who met the criteria was checked for 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels. Results A total of 80 neonates met the criteria, where 40 were healthy neonates and 40 were sepsis neonates. A 38/40 healthy neonates and 39/40 sepsis neonates had a deficiency of vitamin D. The mean level of 25 hydroxyvitamin D in healthy neonates vs sepsis neonates is 11.6 (4.1) ng/mL vs 10.3 (4.3) ng/mL; p=0.144. Conclusion Vitamin D deficiency in >95% of neonates. There is no significant difference in the mean level of 25 hydroxyvitamin D in healthy and sepsis neonates at Dr. Moh. Hoesin Hospital, Palembang. Keywords: Neonatal sepsis, 25 hydroxyvitamin D, vitamin D, neonate.
