Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a role between emotional intelligence and emotional exhaustion in people who are in toxic relationships. The hypothesis in this study is that there is a relationship between emotional intelligence and emotional exhaustion. The population in this study were individuals who were in a toxic relationship. The research sample used was 150 people in data collection and 50 people were used as test participants. The data collection technique used purposive sampling. The measuring instrument used is an emotional exhaustion scale that refers to aspects of Pines and Aronson’s (1989) theory and an emotional intelligence scale that refers to aspects of Goleman’s (2015) theory. Data analysis was carried out using simple regression techniques. The results of the analysis showed an R square of 0.103 and a significance value of 0.000 (p<0.005). This shows that emotional intelligence has a role with emotional exhaustion. Thus, the hypothesis of this study can be accepted where the contribution of emotional intelligence to emotional exhaustion is 10.3%.
