Abstract

The utilization of renewable energy especially water energy as an alternative to meet energy needs in Indonesia. Piko-scale hydropower plants play an important role in economic development in remote and rural areas. Utilization of water energy on a pico scale requires a small turbine that combines efficiency and economic. Crossflow turbine is the appropriate turbine to be used in pico-scale hydropower system especially in remote and rural areas in Indonesia due to its several advantages, simple construction, good performance in various flow variations, suitability to be placed in low head conditions. One of the parameters that affect the performance of a crossflow turbine is the effect of the disk and blade curve. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the shape of the upper blade crossflow turbine on the electrical power and efficiency produced. In this research, the crossflow turbine was designed using a speed triangle approach and varied the shape of the crossflow turbine blade with curvature and leading edge shapes. Then, to determine the effect of the shape of the upper blade, testing was carried out using experimental methods. From the test results, it was found that the optimum blade shape for the crossflow turbine designed was the leading blade. Based on experimental results on the shape of the blade the maximum leading efficiency produced by the turbine is equal to 31,8 %.
