Abstract

Kepok banana peel (Musa balbisiana Colla) is known to contain flavonoid secondary metabolites which have antidiabetic effects. The purpose of this research was to determine the effectiveness of reducing blood glucose levels in the ethanol fraction of Kepok banana peel. This study was divided into 6 groups, namely the normal group (0.5% Na-CMC suspension), positive control (Metformin 9mg/200g), negative control (0.5% Na-CMC suspension) and kepok banana peel ethanol fraction treatment with variations. dose 100, 200, 400mg/kgBW. Alloxan induced rats with a dose of 125 mg/kg BW until blood glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL, the ethanol fraction of Kepok banana peel was given for 14 days. The results showed that the percentage reduction in blood glucose levels in the ethanol fraction of Kepok banana peel at doses of 100, 200, 400 mg/KgBW was significantly different from the negative control (p<0.05), with percentages of 47.30; 51.31; and 58.78. The dose of 400 mg/kgBW was not significantly different from metformin (p>0.05) while the doses of 100 and 200 mg/kgBW were significantly different from metformin (p<0.05). The ED50 of the ethanol fraction of Kepok banana peel is 169.02 mg/KgBW. Histopathological observations of the pancreas showed that the rat pancreatic β cell necrosis score in the 400 mg/KgBW dose group had the best cell regeneration effect with a damage rate of 1-25% compared to the 100 and 200 mg/KgBW dose groups.
