Abstract

ABSTRACT Effect of Giving Ethanol Extract of Areca nut Seeds (Areca cataechu L.) as Immunostimulant to Immunoglobulin G (IgG), Spleen Histology, and Liver Histology of Male Wistar Rats Induced by Salmonella thypi Bacteria Shinta Ayuni Wulandari1, Zen Hafy2, Salni3 Master of Biomedical Science Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University Jl. Kemuning, Palembang, Sumatera Selatan 30114, Telp.+62711-373438, Indonesia Salmonella thypi bacteria are gram-negative facultative anaerobes that can cause disorders of the liver, spleen, bone marrow and attack parts of the digestive tract. Salmonella thypi bacterial infection can reduce immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the spleen and liver organs which can cause damage due to infection. This study aims to determine the effect of ethanol extract of areca nut seeds (Areca cataechu L.) on immunoglobulin G (IgG), liver histology and spleen histology of male Wistar rats induced by Salmonella thypi bacteria. The samples used were male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) with the criteria of 2-3 months old, body weight 15-200gr, healthy and not anatomically defective. The test animals used in this study were 5 rats per group, with a total sample of 30 rats. The bacteria used to induce male white rat wistar strain (Rattus norvegicus) is Salmonella Thypi a dose of 105 CFU (Colony Forming Unit). Test animals in this study were acclimatized for 7 days, then given treatment according to the dose during the experiment. The results showed that ethanol extract of areca nut seeds (Areca cataechu L.) had a significant effect on immunoglobulin G (IgG) of male rats induced by Salmonella thypi bacteria. Giving ethanol extract of areca nut seeds (Areca cataechu L.) has a significant effect in minimizing histological damage to the liver and spleen in male rats induced by Salmonella thypi bacteria.
