Abstract

The many forms of discrimination experienced by South Korean women, such as sexual harassment, spycam and gender bias are caused by the strong patriarchal culture in South Korean society, giving rise to the women’s protest movement at Hyehwa Station. This research aims to see how radical feminism theory is applied to the case of the women’s protest movement at Hyehwa Station, South Korea. This research uses the radical feminism theory and the concept of digital feminism to see the application of theory the cases discussed. Qualitative research method using secondary data collected from various sources, including journals, books, reports and several articles released online. There are 3 dimensions in looking at th application of radical feminism theory to the protest movement at Hyehwa Station. First, ideology explains the existence of strong solidarity among women as an action against the patriarchal ideology that exists in society. Second, psychological explains that participation in the global community is a form of psychological support for participants. Third, violence explains that structural changes can reduce cases of oppression that occur against women. The ideology dimension that is considered the most influential in this research in looking at the application of radical feminism theory to the women’s protest movement at Hyehwa Station, South Korea. In the end, the women’s protest movement at Hyehwa Station was in accordance with the teachings of radical feminism and was overall successful in fighting patriarchal culture which is the root of gender inequality in South Korea.
