Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of electric current dan processing time of elektrocoagulatio method on decreasing TSS (Total Suspended Solid), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and ammonia concentrations in the urea fertilizer industrial wastewater treatment using aluminum electrodes. This research was also carried out to determine the kinetics on the performance of the electrocoagulation system. There are 3 variations of the current (10 Amperes, 15 Amperes, and 20 Amperes) that applied at the power supply and 3 variations of processing time (30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 90 minutes). Analysis of TSS concentrations was conducted gravimetrically. Analysis of COD concentrations was conducted spectrophotometrically by UV-Visible spectrophotometry. Analysis of ammonia concentrations was conducted by fenat method using UV-Visible spectrophotometry. The results of the ANOVA at the 5% and 1% level showed that the treatment of varying the electric current and time of the electrocoagulation process had a significant effect on reducing the TSS, COD and ammonia consentrations. Treatment at the 20 Ampere with 90 minutes had the highest efficiency in reducing TSS, COD and ammonia consentrations reached 91%; 93%; and 66%. Analysis of the average kinetic of the reduction of TSS, COD, and ammonia shows that the electrocoagulation process follows the second order model kinetics with a reaction rate constant (k) of 2×10-4 L.mg-1.minute-1, 3×10-4 L.mg-1.minute-1, dan 1×10-4 L.mg-1.minute-1.
