Abstract

Benzene is a chemical that is carcinogenic to humans and animals and can reduce the number of blood cells and cause chronic poisoning and even leukemia. Benzene compounds that enter the body are immunotoxic. Benzene was identified as an environmental carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Benzene can damage the immune system, causing a reduction in the number of immune cells. Long-term exposure to low levels of benzene can also reduce blood cell counts and increase the risk of cancer. There is not much explanation about the effect of benzene exposure on pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-α). This study aims to determine the effect of benzene exposure on IL-6 and TNF-α levels in male white Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). This research is an in vivo experimental study with a post-test with a control group design using male Wistar white male rats that were exposed to 5 ppm, 10 ppm, and 20 ppm benzene by inhalation for 8 hours/day during weekdays (Monday-Friday) for 28 days. IL-6 and TNF-α were measured using the ELISA method.Based on the results, the average levels of IL-6 and TNF-α that were given exposure increased. Exposure to 5, 10, and 20 ppm benzene by inhalation had a significant effect on levels of IL-6 (p=≤0.001) and TNF-α (p=<0.001).Exposure to 5 ppm, 10 ppm, and 20 ppm benzene by inhalation can increase IL-6 and TNF-α levels in male Wistar white rats (Rattus norvegicus).
