Abstract
The effect of self-assessment on student performance in an article writing course at Sriwijaya University's English Education Study Program is investigated in this study. Data were gathered from 73 seventh-semester students using a qualitative case study approach. This included questionnaires, interviews, and documentation analysis. The findings show that students' autonomy and engagement are greatly increased by self-assessment, which promotes a reflective learning cycle and ongoing progress. This is consistent with constructivist and cognitive theories, which argue that self-assessment enhances comprehension by fusing new information with pre-existing abilities. Additionally, self-assessment promotes a thorough approach to education that makes use of a variety of feedback methods in order to achieve academic standards and enhance writing abilities. Overall, the results highlight the importance of self-assessment in improving writing skills and academic accomplishment, pointing to it as a critical instrument for raising student autonomy and efficacy. In order to foster a more independent and dynamic learning environment, suggestions are given for educators on how to incorporate self-assessment into instructional practices.
