Abstract

American cockroaches are disease vectors whose transmission is mechanical. American cockroaches can cause public health problems, this is due to their association with human waste and disease as well as their ability to move from sewers to homes and commercial establishments. The control of American cockroaches that is often carried out by the public is by using synthetic insecticides, because it is considered more practical, but the use of synthetic insecticides can have a negative impact on both humans and the environment. Therefore, an alternative that is safe for the environment is needed, namely vegetable insecticides. Botanical insecticides are repellent substances made from natural raw materials obtained from plants. The use of vegetable insecticides, apart from minimizing environmental pollution, is also considered cheaper than using chemical insecticides. It is thought that Gadung tubers can be used as a vegetable insecticide because they contain alkaloid compounds such as discorine, cyanogenic glycosides, saponins, sapogenins. And cyanide acid is toxic. This research aims to determine the toxicity of gadung tuber extract on cockroach mortality (Periplaneta americana) and determine the LC50 value of gadung tuber extract which can be used as a vegetable insecticide for cockroaches. This research was conducted from August 2022 to February 2023. This research used an experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments (control (+), 32%, 28%, 24%, and 20% with 5 repetitions. The average was calculated -average mortality of American cockroaches after the 24th, 48th and 72nd hours. The data obtained were analyzed using One Way ANOVA. The results showed that gadung tuber extract was effective as a botanical insecticide on American cockroach mortality with an LC50 value of 24.566%. found in gadung tuber extract are alkaloids, steroids, and tannins.
