Abstract

Bricks are one of the basic building materials that have long been recognized and used by most people in various construction activities such as residential walls, buildings, fences, channels, and foundations. In order to minimize the amount of cement and aggregate used in making bricks, there is a need for effective measures to reduce carbon emissions to the environment through the use of cement. One approach in addressing the problems of sustainable development and industry is to modify and utilize paper mill waste materials as clay substitutes. In this study, the collection of additional materials to be used was obtained from PT OKI Pulp and Paper Mills with the types of waste used, namely fly ash as a substitute for cement and lime mud as a substitute for fine aggregate. This study was conducted to determine the physical and mechanical properties of bricks with a mixture of paper mill waste. Physical and mechanical testing on bricks that have been molded and burned is done by physical testing (appearance, water absorption, dimensions and size) and mechanical testing (compressive strength). The test results show a physical and visual form that is less than ideal, for testing the size there is a size that meets the specifications for thickness, but does not meet the specifications for length and width and there is also a size that does not meet the overall specifications but the visual color of the bricks in accordance with the provisions of SNI 15-0553- 1989. For testing the absorbency of hollow bricks is not in accordance with SNI 15-0553-1989 standards and testing the maximum compressive strength value achieved by 4.84 MPa and the minimum value achieved by 2.46 MPa and can be classified that the composition of the mixture is significant to the compressive strength of the test results
