Abstract
SMFC is a development of the concept of utilizing Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) with the concept of planting anodes in anoxic sediments and cathodes in the water column. This experimental research aims to examine the effect of the optimal electrode distance used in SMFC and assess the optimal electrical energy potential based on electrode distance in SMFC in Kong River, South Sumatra. The research was conducted in July-August 2023. Sampling was conducted in Sungai Kong, South Sumatra. Research activities include SMFC circuit using different electrode spacing (2, 4, 6, 8 cm), measuring the voltage of each circuit and converting the voltage into current density. The results showed that the current density at a distance of 2 cm was 224.48 - 739.30 mA/m², a distance of 4 cm was 223.44 - 854.59 mA/m², a distance of 6 cm was 220.75 - 783.77 mA/m² and a distance of 8 cm was 245.05 - 724.88 mA/m². The largest SMFC potential is at a distance of 8 cm with an average of 434.56 mA/m². Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the optimal electrode distance is a distance of 8 cm which has greater potential than other distances in generating electrical energy.
