Abstract
Coal is widely used as a fuel for industrial use. Coal reserves in Indonesia are quite abundant, especially low quality coal. However, low quality coal has a low calorific value if it is directly used as fuel. One alternative utilization of low rank coal is by making char through a coal gassification process and coal pyrolysis process, which is expected to have basic characteristics such as green coke, hence it might be fired as one of alternative fuel for industrial purposes. In this study, there were four types of coal used as raw materials for making char with coal gasification and pyrolysis processes, namely BB 46, BB 50, BB 64, and BB 72. In this study, also added cooking oil on coal before the process was carried out gasification and pyrolysis which aims to increase the temperature of the process. In this study, there was some coal that was been gassification and pyrolysis which is added with used cooking oil and there was also no added cooking oil to see theeffect of used cooking oil on the results of gasification and pyrolysis. The process of gasification and pyrolysis is carried out in parallel, where heat generated from the gasification process is used to heat the pyrolysis reactor. The char produced is then carried out proximate testing for further analysis. Char produced by gasification and pyrolysis of coal has different characteristics from the raw material. Coal gasification and pyrolysis processes can increase the fixed carbon and reduce the volatile matter and moisture content of coal. Char produced by coal pyrolysis tends to have better quality compared to char produced by coal gasification. Char from coal pyrolysis has a higher percentage of fixed carbon compared to char produced by coal gasification. However, the water content and volatile matter are relatively lower than the char produced by coal gasification. The most optimal type of coal in the manufacture of char produced by gasification and coal pyrolysis in this study is BB 50 type coal. The process of gasification and pyrolysis of BB 50 type coal produces char with the percentage of fixed carbon to 82.08% and 86.68% respectively, there was an increase in the percentage of fixed carbon by 85.70% and 96.11% of raw materials’ fixed carbon.
