Abstract

In recent years there has been quite significant progress in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning, the most basic use of refrigeration systems is in the field of making ice cubes, for example refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners. This research aims to analyze the performance of the AC working system in the field of making ice cubes by utilizing an expansion valve as a tool component that is modified or added to the cooling system by knowing the significant comparison of the effects resulting from each type of expansion valve opening diameter, namely 50 %, 70% and 100% of the ice cube cooling process. From the test results data on the three types of expansion valve opening diameters, the results obtained from the cooling system at 50% valve opening diameter with size specifications according to the capillary pipe of 0.54 mm produce a compressor working value of 0.394 kW, the amount of heat released by the condenser is 2.383 kW, and the heat absorption in the evaporator is 1,989 kW, resulting in a cooling system coefficient of performance (COP) value of 5,048. Thus, when the expansion valve is used, it works most efficiently as indicated by the type of expansion valve opening diameter of 50% or 0.54 mm in the capillary pipe.
