Abstract

The continuous increase in CO2 gas emissions results in a greenhouse effect that causes global warming and is now a serious issue being discussed by the world. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce CO2 gas emissions. This research aims to optimize the manufacture of porous filters from Hydroxyapatite/SiO2 composites on the formation of porosity for optimal carbon dioxide absorption. In this study, the effect of hydroxyapatite composition, space holder composition, sintering temperature and holding time were investigated to determine the porosity. Taguchi method with L9 orthogonal array was used to analyze the contribution for each parameter. ANOVA results revealed that the optimal parameter flow was obtained as HA 65%, SH 15%, Sintering Temperature 900oC and Holding Time 90 minutes. The manufacturing process begins by mixing hydroxyapatite powder, SiO2 powder and mung bean powder using a ball mill with rotation speed of 225 rpm for 2 hours. Furthermore, the mixture was molded using a uniaxial pressure compaction machine. The specimens were then sintered at 900°C with a holding time of 90 minutes. Density testing was carried out using the Archimedes method, resulting in a porosity of 35.4% in the HA/SiO2 specimen with 65% HA and 15% space holder. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the dominant phases were hydroxyapatite (HA) and SiO2. Microstructure observation using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed the presence of pores with sizes ranging from 0.774 µm to 5.547 µm with pores formed interconnected. Carbon capture testing showed a decrease in CO2 concentration by an average of 62.15%.
