Abstract

The continuous increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has encouraged researchers to further study strategies to reduce CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. Adsorption of solids is one strategy that is of great interest to researchers because it has several advantages. Porous ceramic is a filter of solid material that uses adsorption mechanism in reducing CO2 emission. This study aims to analyse the effect of variations in the composition of hydroxyapatite as a matrix and kaolin as a renfoiced ceramic on its characteristics, such as physical properties, chemical properties, and the ability of ceramics in CO2 adsorption. The process of making porous ceramics involves calcination with an electric furnace, grinding, sieving, mixing using ball milling, compression and sintering. In the research data, desity testing using Archimedes theory, porous ceramics with 70% HA/30% Kaolin composition has the largest average porosity value of 23.61%, X-ray diffraction (XRD) testing has 2 dominant phases, namely hydroxyapatite (HA) phase and kaolin phase, observation of the microstructure of the ceramic surface using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows the presence of pores with sizes from 0.72 μm to 9.19 μm, carbon capture testing shows that HA / Kaolin ceramics successfully adsorb CO2 well and have an average adsorption ability of 58.90% (732.043 PPM).
