Abstract

Hot dipping is a process of coating the base metal with other metals, which in the process is done by dipping a base metal to the other metals that has been melting before. but the metal coating would have a melting point below the base metal to be coated with a metal coating melting point less than 1000°C. by varying the time and temperatures, hot dipping process produces differences layer thickness, surface roughness, and the rate of corrosion. Steel ASTM A53 which has been coated by dipping into a bath of Al-liquid at a temperature of 750°C, 775°C and 800°C for 2 minutes, 4 minutes and 6 minutes decreased the surface roughness, where the average final surface roughness of the specimen 750°C is 4.7μm, on the specimen 775°C is 4μm, and the specimen of 800°C is 3,3 μm. Extra thickness also occur along with the length of time of immersion and temperatures rise. The experiment results showed the thickest layer existing at the time of 6 minutes with an average thickness 55.6 μm while the smallest at the time of immersion 2 minutes with an average thickness is 43.2 μm. with increasing temperature, thickness also increased, it appears that temperatures of 800°C has a thickness of 48.9 μm and the lowest at a temperature is 750°C of 48.7 μm. the corrosion rate of the test results, obtained the corrosion rate was biggest with the raw material of 1.494 mm /y, while the corrosion rate is the smallest owned by the specimen with immersion time of 6 minutes is equal to 1.056 mm/y. their immersion temperature variation, the rate of corrosion at temperatures of 750°C at 1.197 mm/y, the temperature of 775°C at 1.178 mm/y, and the temperature of 800°C at 1.161 mm/y. This case shows that the rising temperature and long immersion time, the corrosion rate will decreases, which indicates the rising temperature and long immersion time, will produce a good protection from corrosion.
