Abstract

Background: Patients with maxillary transverse deficiency can be characterized by a narrowed maxilla, deep and narrow palate, anterior crowding, proclination of anterior teeth, unilateral or bilateral posterior crossbite, and narrowing of the upper airway dimensions. Conditions of maxillary transverse deficiency can be treated with orthodontic treatment using a maxillary expansion which aims to increase the transverse dimension of the maxilla and increase the volume of the upper airway. Objective: The aim of this literature review was to determine the effect of using a maxillary expansion on changes in upper airway volume. Methods: Literature was selected using the Pubmed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases published from 2008 to 2023. Articles that fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria were assessed using Critical Appraisal Skills Program bias assessment and summarized to obtain data on changes in upper airway volume which includes nasal cavity volume, nasopharyngeal volume and oropharyngeal volume in the journal. Results: Ten eligible articles were included in this literature review that consisting of 8 cohort studies and 2 case-control studies which bias assessment results were low in 4 articles and moderate in 6 articles. there is a change in the condition of the upper airway volume. All articles in this literature review stated that there was an increase in the volume of the nasal cavity, 9 out of 10 articles stated that there was an increase in the volume of the nasopharynx, and 7 out of 9 articles stated that there was an increase in the volume of the oropharynx. Conclusion: The use of maxillary expansion has the effect to changes in upper airway volume in patients with maxillary transverse deficiency by increasing the volume of the nasal cavity, nasopharynx and oropharynx.
