Abstract

Background: One of the most common causes of neonatal death is low birth weight (LBW) babies. LBW babies have a greater risk of experiencing neonatal death compared to babies born with normal weight. This condition requires management to prevent complications, one of which is the kangaroo mother care (KMC) method of nursing. Objective: To describe nursing care for LBW children by providing evidence-based Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) interventions. Method: Using a descriptive case study method with a 3 case approach and journal review of LBW patients. Results: The results of the assessment showed that all three managed patients experienced LBW with 3 nursing problems that were established in all three. The therapy given to the three patients was the Kangaroo Mother Care method 2 times a day with each administration lasting ± 60 minutes for 3 consecutive days. The KMC method helps the process of increasing the baby's weight by improving the attachment process for LBW. Discussion: KMC affects the baby's ability to attach when sucking breast milk, where breast milk is an important component in the baby's growth. The breast milk a baby drinks can meet the baby's nutritional needs which will result in an increase in the baby's weight. The position of a baby receiving KMC makes it easier for the mother to give breast milk directly to the baby. Stimulation from the baby can increase the mother's breast milk production, so that the mother will give her milk more often according to the baby's needs. Babies who breastfeed for longer will make the baby feel calm and comfortable so that the baby gets an adequate supply of breast milk and the energy obtained by the body is only focused on growth, thereby helping the baby's weight gain process. Conclusion: KMC helps the process of increasing body weight by improving the attachment process for the baby. KMC intervention can be used as an alternative in the process of increasing body weight in LBW.
