Abstract
Background: Mangrove crab production produces crab shell waste as much as 75% of the total production. The chitin content in crab shells can be utilized as a raw material for chitosan. Chitosan combined with xanthan gum can be used as raw material for making periodontal films. Objective: To determine the characteristics of chitosan (Scylla serrata) film with xanthan gum thickener as a drug delivery medium in periodontal therapy. Methods: This study is a quantitative descriptive study with the subject in the form of chitosan (Scylla serrata) film with xanthan gum thickener. The sample consisted of 1 type of chitosan film with xanthan gum thickener which was cut to the size according to the standard of film characteristic test equipment. Results: This study showed a film thickness of 0.3 mm with a weight of 0.0583 g, and a film pH of 7.15 which is classified as neutral. The film has good stability with a percentage loss of water content of 5.8% and a high swelling index value of 40.3%. This indicates a longer residence time of the film while in the periodontal pockets. The film has good flexibility with a folding resistance of 573 folds, a tensile strength of 1,634 N/mm2 and a percent elongation of 18.75%. The drug distribution in the film was well absorbed and dispersed by showing a drug content of 86.80%. Conclusion: Films of chitosan (Scylla serrata) with xanthan gum thickener have met the requirements for characteristics as a preparation in drug delivery systems, especially for periodontal therapy.
