Abstract

The problems often faced in culture of glass eel A. bicolor are slow growth and low survival. Efforts to increase the survival and growth of the glass eel A. bicolor can be done by environmental engineering, one of which is the method of light duration (photoperiod). This research aimed to determine the best photoperiod for the survival rate and growth of the glass eel A. bicolor. The study was conducted at the Aquaculture and Experimental Pond Laboratory, Aquaculture Study Program, Fisheries Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya in December 2023-January 2024. This research used a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 5 treatments and 3 replications, that were photoperiod P1: 0 hour light and 24 hour dark (0L:24D), P2: 6 hour light and 18 hour dark (6L:18D), P3: 12 hour light and 12 hour dark (12L:12D), P4: 18 hour light and 6 hour dark (18L:6D), and P5: 24 hour light and 0 hour dark (24L:0D). The results showed that light durations of 24 hours dark (P1) was the best of treatment with survival rate of 94.81%, absolute weight growth was 0.675 g, absolute length growth of 2.30 cm, feed efficiency 55.72% and whole glucose body fluids 146.90 mg dL-1. The water quality during P1 (0T:24G) rearing for glass eel A. bicolor culture, temperature 27.30-29.30oC, pH 7.50-7.88, dissolved oxygen 6.21-6.34 mg L-1, ammonia 0.04-0.07 mg L-1, alkalinity 32-56 mg L-1, and turbidity 0.02-0.04 NTU. The 24 hour dark on rearing media shows that this condition is in accordance with the habitat of glass eel A. bicolor which is nocturnal and relies more on the sense of smell. The condition of 24 hour dark on rearing media can support better behavioral responses and physiological functions of glass eel A. bicolor.
