Abstract

The application of K2CO3-based catalysts from oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) aims to utilize and process biomass waste. TKKS contains K2CO3 which is needed as a raw material for catalyst production. K2CO3 in TKKS is obtained by solid-liquid extraction (leaching) method. The potassium content in the TKKS ash and solids resulting from the extraction was evaluated using XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence). The analysis showed that the potassium content in the extracted solids was 82.532%. The detected potassium was analyzed as K2CO3 with a content of 85.91%. Catalyst in the form of Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) was produced from K2CO3 based TKKS and glycerol. The catalyst was used in the transesterification reaction of RBDPO and methanol. The effect of catalyst in biodiesel production was observed and evaluated based on biodiesel characterization from SNI 7182:2015. The parameters measured were density, viscosity, acid number, total glycerol content, and % yield produced. The results showed the effect of catalyst molar ratio and the amount of catalyst in biodiesel. The optimum condition for biodiesel synthesis is the amount of catalyst 4% obtained from the variation of catalyst molar ratio 1:3.5. These conditions resulted in a density of 884 kg/m3, viscosity of 4.0308 cSt, acid number of 0.1772 mg-KOH/gr, total glycerol of 0.181510%-mass, and 98.49% yield. The catalyst that produced the optimum condition was also evaluated based on density, viscosity, pH, and interaction between DES constituents using FTIR. The results showed the DES catalyst density value of 1487.5 kg/m3, viscosity of 28250 cP, pH of 13 (alkaline-based), and the main functional group in the form of hydrogen bonds reviewed on the FTIR graph has a peak in the 3264,89 cm-1 region.
