Abstract

These differences in views demonstrate the complexity of people's perceptions of the existence of scavengers and highlight the importance of understanding the various factors that shape these perceptions. The aim of the research is to determine public perception and the factors behind the public's perception of the existence of scavengers around second-hand goods collection businesses, Sei Selincah Village, Kalidoni District, Palembang City. The theory used is Irwanto's (2002) theory of perception, which explains that after individuals interact with the objects they perceive, the results of perception can be divided into two types of perception, namely positive perception and negative perception. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative research method with a case study research strategy. The results of this research show that public perceptions regarding the existence of scavengers around used goods collectors in Sei Selincah Village are divided into two types, namely positive perceptions and negative perceptions. Positive perceptions include the community recognizing the contribution of scavengers in keeping the environment clean and creating independent work opportunities. Meanwhile, negative perceptions include that the presence of scavengers can pose a risk of spreading disease because they often come into contact with an unhygienic environment, they also often enter people's home areas without permission when looking for items that can be recycled, as well as community concerns about the exploitation of child labor by scavenger families. Meanwhile, the background to the public's perception of the existence of scavengers is due to, among other factors, the community's economic status, community experience factors, community knowledge factors, and mass media factors..
