Abstract
The Hallyu phenomenon enables the South Korean entertainment industry to spread popular culture South Korea to all corners of the world. Through music, dramas, films, and other cultural products, South Korea has sold its culture by blending traditional and modern elements. Hallyu has also marketed commercial products and South Korean tourism to audiences in various countries. Hallyu is not only about cross-country cultural transfer or expanding the entertainment industry but has become a force for economic gain for South Korea. This research aims to understand popular culture in the South Korean entertainment industry through the documentary film BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky. Data were obtained from obsevations and documentation using qualitative research methods. This study employs Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis theory by examining denotative, connotative, and mythic meanings. The results show that at the denotative level, the South Korean entertainment industry shapes today’s global culture through K-Pop. At the connotative level, there is a globally accepted image of South Korean culture. The myth formed is that the development of K-Pop supports the success of the South Korea’s soft power strategy. Keywords: Popular Culture, South Korean Entertainment Industry, Documentary Film.
