Abstract

Background : Bleeding is a common complication of surgery.The body's mechanism for spontaneously stopping bleeding is hemostatics. Bleeding during and after surgery is certainly a challenge for surgeons if it is not controlled. Curcuma longa extract can shorten the bleeding time because it contains curcumin and tannin. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Curcuma longa extract on bleeding time in Wistar rats. Methods: Experimental study with post test only control group design. A total of 24 male wistar rats were divided into 4 groups, namely groups given tranexamic acid (positive control), distilled water (negative control), 50% concentration of Curcuma longa extract and 100% concentration of Curcuma longa extract. The treatment was given orally and only given once using a gastric sonde before the bleeding time test, then waited for 1 hour before cutting. All samples were cut along 0.5 cm from the tip of the rat's tail. Blood coming out of the tail tip was dripped on whatman paper with a time of 30 seconds per box until the bleeding stopped. Bleeding time was calculated by counting the number of boxes that had blood spots and multiplied by 30 seconds. The data obtained were then analyzed with the Independent sample t-test and Post Hoc Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. Results: The results of the study showed that the bleeding time of 100% turmeric extract was shorter than the 50% concentration of turmeric extract. . The difference in the mean value of bleeding time of tranexamic acid and curcuma longa was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: Curcuma longa extract at concentration of 50% and 100% can have an effect in shortening the bleeding time in wistar rats. Keywords: Hemostatic, Curcuma longa, Bleeding time
