Abstract

Water hyacinth is an aquatic plant that thrives in freshwater, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Despite its visual beauty with unique flowers, water hyacinth can become a serious problem when it grows excessively in water bodies. Rapid growth and significant surface coverage can have negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to test a device to decompose water hyacinth waste into water hyacinth compost. The research was conducted from December 2023 to April 2024. Performance measurements of the decomposing machine were conducted in the parking lot of the Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Palembang. The method used in this research is a descriptive method with data presented in table form. The research results obtained include data on 1) Initial weight input (kg) and decomposed output (kg), 2) Decomposition time (minutes), 3) Electrical power (W), and rotation speed (rpm). The parameters used in this research are 1) Decomposition capacity, 2) Decomposer machine efficiency, and power requirements. These data and parameters apply to 6-inch, 8-inch, and 10 inch pulleys. The treatments consisted of an initial material amount of 1.5 kg and were repeated three times for each pulley used. The results showed that the highest decomposition capacity was found with the 6-inch pulley with an average of 19.6 kg/hour, while the lowest decomposition capacity was found with the 10-inch pulley with an average of 17 kg/hour. The highest decomposer machine efficiency was found with the 6-inch pulley with an average efficiency of 39%, while the lowest machine efficiency was found with the 10 inch pulley with an average efficiency of 28%. The highest power requirement was found with the 6-inch pulley because its electrical power (W) was higher than the other pulleys. This indicates that the faster the machine's rotation speed during the decomposition process, the greater the power requirement and decomposition output, and the shorter the machine operating time needed.
