Abstract

Currently, the young coconut processing industry as a whole is still focused on processing the ivory of the coconut fruit as the main product, but the processing industry of by-products such as coir and coconut shell is still traditionally processed and not ideal. This study aims to determine the effect of variation in cylinder rotation speed of young coconut coir decomposing machine on cocopeat yield. This research was conducted from March to April 2024. Tool design and data collection were carried out at the Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Palembang. The research method used is an experimental method with the stages of preparing tools and materials, making machines, testing performance, collecting data, processing data, and analyzing descriptively. The coconut fiber decomposing machine was operated with three different cylinder rotation speeds. The parameters observed were decomposition yield, energy consumption, percentage of 16 mesh cocopeat, percentage of 20 mesh cocopeat and percentage of 24 mesh cocopeat. The results showed that the smaller the size of the driven pulley, the greater the rotation speed produced and the greater the energy consumption required. The use of a 6 inch pulley is more efficient because the efficiency value reaches 70%. The use of a 6 inch pulley produces a smaller 16 mesh cocopeat which is 9% compared to the 8 inch and 10 inch pulleys which are 10% and 11%. In cocopeat measuring 20 mesh and 24 mesh the use of a 6 inch pulley has increased. Keywords: young coconut fiber, cocopeat, coir decomposing machine
