Abstract

The rapid development of the textile industry has resulted in an increase in liquid dye waste produced. Congo red dye is widely used in textile production. Congo red has toxic properties so it will cause various diseases if it enters the human body in large quantities. Therefore, it is necessary to process dye liquid waste. In this research, the synthesis of Fe3O4/Activated Carbon@ZnO composite was carried out for the adsorption and degradation of Congo red dye, the variables used were pH, concentration and contact time. The composite synthesis results were characterized using VSM, XRD and UV-DRS. The synthesis of Fe3O4/Activated Carbon@ZnO composite produces black powder which has magnetic properties with a magnetization saturation value of 58.04 emu/g. The XRD characterization results show the highest peak intensity at an angle of 2θ = 36.25° with a crystal size of 24.57 nm. The UV-VIS DRS characterization results show a band gap value of 1.66 eV. The pHpzc value obtained was 8.4. The best condition for reducing the concentration of Congo red dye with the Fe3O4/Activated Carbon@ZnO composite is to obtain a concentration of 20 ppm of Congo Red dye with a pH of 5 and within 100 minutes. Determining the effectiveness of reducing Congo red concentration using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer with a maximum wavelength of 498 nm was 86.16% with UV irradiation and 79.14% without UV irradiation.
