Abstract

Background: The quality of life is influenced by many factors one of them is a chronic disease such as epilepsy. In addition to experience medical problems, patients with epilepsy also experience psychosocial problems so that problems in these patients become more complex even more the patient is a child. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of risk factors on the quality of life of children with epilepsy in RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Method: An analytic observational research with cross-sectional design was conducted in child polyclinic RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Data collection using total sampling technique. The study was conducted in November-December 2017. Quality of life was measured using shortened quality of life in childhood epilepsy questionnaire-parent form (QOLCE-55). Result: There were 40 children with epilepsy in dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in November-December 2017. Age of onset of seizures of children (r= 0.331, p=0.037), duration of children experienced from epilepsy (r=-0.423; p=0.007), number of child seizures in the last 6 months (r=0,304; p=0,046) correlated significantly to quality of life of children with epilepsy. Etiology of childhood epilepsy significantly correlates to the quality of life of children with epilepsy (p=<0.001). There is no correlation between child age and the quality of life of children with epilepsy. There is no relationship between the sex of the child, the number of dependent children in the family, the level of parental education, the income of the parents, the type of child seizures, the number of antiepileptic drugs, and the EEG picture on the quality of life of the child with epilepsy. Conclusion: The quality of life of children with epilepsy is affected by the onset of seizures of children, how long the child experienced from epilepsy, the number of child seizures in the last 6 months and the etiology of epilepsy.
